Two men looked through prison bars; One saw mud, the other saw stars.


“Better than others, better than before, better than expected.” This is the core philosophy of the CIT Industrial Engineering Department. Parents, faculty, and guests…This batch has certainly achieved this. This is a batch of winners. I would like to acknowledge some of them who made the College of Engineering and Architecture and the whole CIT proud.


In sports…just for this year’s Intramural Games…

· Champion for Basketball Women… Geralie P. Balanay and Cristina R. Druhum.

· Champion for Basketball Men… Ernel G. Pacinio


In music…

Champion in the SSG’s Love Duet ….

· Madge B. Abastas and her partner Michael Jerecho T. Dueñas who is also this year’s 2nd Runner up SSG Search for the Technologian Pop Idol last August 23, 2008

· Mae Lozada - Gold Medalist, for winning two gold medals in the Dancesport Council of the Philippines, Inc. Mid-Year Ranking and Competition held last July 5, 2008. Mae Lozada is a World Dancesport champion.


In leadership…

· Jay R. Dayondon…one of CIT’s delegates for the 2007 2nd Aboitiz Future Leaders Business Summit


In academic competitions…

· Second Place, 5th Interschool Bangga sa Kinaadman 2008 (College Category) held last July 25, 2008 held at the Dep-Ed Conference Hall, Cebu City. This is sponsored by the Cebu City Youth Development Commission of the Cebu City Government.

· Champion, SSG General Information Quiz Bowl during the CIT Colors Day last August 20, 2008 in the Auditorium

· Champion, Cebu-wide CESAFI Trivia Quiz Bowl

And let us not forget that this batch has attained the award for the IE Council as CIT’s Most Outstanding Student Organization…third time in the last eight years…the highest number among ALL the student organizations in CIT.


Now that you are about to embark another chapter in your lives…now that you are to venture into the ‘blue ocean’…let me just tell you two things….

* Be the one that seize the stars.
* Be the one that makes things happen.


Be a WINNER. Be the one that seize the stars.

The winner is always part of the solution; the loser is always part of the problem.

The winner sees an answer for every problem; the loser sees a problem in every answer.

The winner says, “It may be difficult but it’s possible,”; the loser says, “It may be possible but it’s too difficult.”


Be a LEADER. Be the one that makes things happen.

Most of us have this sickness more pervasive than cancer…Let’s call it “excusitis”. All of us are familiar with this. If you study people long enough you will discover one major difference between those who are successful and those who aren’t: “The more successful the individual, the less inclined he is to make excuses.”

Benjamin Franklin said, “He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” In life there are only two possibilities – results or excuses. The more you mature, the more you understand that choices are your responsibility.

In my life I discovered that people can be categorized into three:

* Those who make things happen.
* Those who watch as things happen.
* Those who wonder “What happened?”

To the parents…thank you for the trust you gave us to mold your child. It is our honor and privilege to become part of who they are and who they will be.

To the honorees….Yes! I shall continue to terrorize and torture the students if that is the best for me to bring out the best in you… Honorees, be a winner and be a leader. This is our philosophy…”Better than others, better than before, better than expected.” Much is to come your way. If opportunities come, seize the stars. If opportunities don’t come, don’t make excuses…find them or better yet make them.

In whatever situation you are, don’t look down…you’ll see mud. Look up…you’ll see the stars. And when you see them, seize them and make things happen.
